Lay Lake is a 12,000-acre reservoir located in east-central Alabama, bordering St. Clair, Talladega, Shelby, Coosa, and Chilton counties, and is a popular spot for recreation, particularly fishing and boating.

The lake was created in 1914 with the construction of Lay Dam on the Coosa River by the Alabama Power Company. The dam is the first major hydroelectric project of the Alabama Power Company. Situated just thirty-five minutes south of Birmingham off I-65, Lay Lake is easily accessible, making it a popular choice for boaters looking for a nearby getaway.

Lay Lake has a 289-mile shoreline, making it a popular destination for boating, swimming, and other water sports. There are 7 public access marinas on the lake that offer boat launches and fishing piers, and 20 boat ramps for you to get onto the water.

Lay Lake is known for its excellent bass fishing, particularly spotted bass and largemouth bass, and has hosted the Bassmaster Classic fishing tournament four times, in 1996, 2002, 2007, and 2010. In addition to bass, the lake offers fishing for crappie, catfish, striped bass, and other species. The lake boasts a thriving fishery with abundant largemouth and spotted bass, crappie, and bream. For bigger bass, target the creeks and shallow sloughs. Spotted bass prefer the riverine areas. Upstream, the Logan Martin Dam tailwater offers excellent hybrid striped bass, catfish, and striped bass fishing.

For water sports enthusiasts, Lay Lake is a playground waiting to be explored. Whether you're into water skiing, wakeboarding, or tubing, the expansive waters of the lake offer ample space to indulge in your favorite activities.
