Tucked inside Washington County, Lake Elmo is a peaceful and scenic getaway just 30 minutes east of downtown Minneapolis. This spring-fed lake covers approximately 206 acres with a maximum depth of 140 feet, making it one of the deeper lakes in the region. With nearly three miles of shoreline, it's surrounded by rolling hills, native prairie, and oak woodlands that offer a true Midwestern escape.

The lake is part of the Lake Elmo Park Reserve, which spans over 2,100 acres. The nearest town is Lake Elmo, a small but charming city known for its quiet neighborhoods, local markets, and a strong connection to nature.

Lake Elmo Activities

Lake Elmo is ideal for non-motorized boating, such as canoeing, kayaking, and paddleboarding. The calm waters and restrictions on gas-powered boats help keep the experience quiet and serene—perfect for a relaxing paddle or early morning fishing trip. Anglers can expect to find largemouth bass, bluegill, and northern pike, particularly near the weedy edges and drop-offs.

There’s also a swimming pond nearby, maintained separately from the main lake, offering a family-friendly option with a sandy beach and seasonal lifeguards.

If you're up for a picnic after your time on the water, Lake Elmo Park Reserve has shaded areas and grills available. Pack lunch—or better yet, swing by Lake Elmo Inn, a local favorite, and order one of their famous short rib sandwiches.
