Nearby Attractions
Just a short 5 minute boat ride takes you to Carrot Island. Here you will find wild horses that started out as a stock of horses and were kept on the island, but over time they’ve mixed with Spanish horses from other barrier islands. The herd of about 40 horses lives on the tidal marshes, which makes for a great place to watch birds and take amazing pictures.
To dip into the history of the area, Fort Macon State Park is worth a visit. It is centered on an impeccably restored pre-Civil War fort that offers daily guided tours and frequent cannon and musket demonstrations.
